What wind and what place windsurfing needs
Windsurfing works across a wide range of wind. To get a board planing on typical gear you usually need from about 12 knots (roughly 22 km/h); with a big sail and a wide board you can sail from around 8 knots (about 15 km/h), though without planing. The upper limit depends on sail size and experience.
Steady wind and clean water matter more than the number alone: trees, dams and buildings upwind break the wind into gusts, and shallows, weed or obstacles in the water spoil the start and the ride.
What to look for in a spot
- Steady wind: in gusty wind you have to pick a sail for the gusts, and the lulls in between leave you without power.
- Wind direction against the shore: wind blowing off the land carries you out onto the water, so know where the shore downwind is.
- A place to rig and a comfortable way into the water, ideally a gradual entry.
- Open water free of obstacles, moored boats and swimmers.
- Local rules: some waters restrict windsurfing in certain zones or seasons. This page does not list them, so check before you ride.
Frequently asked questions
What wind do you need for windsurfing?
To plane on typical gear you usually need from about 12 knots (roughly 22 km/h). With a large sail and a wide board you can sail in lighter wind, from around 8 knots (15 km/h), without planing. The upper limit depends on sail size and experience. These are general guides, not rules.
Where can you windsurf inland?
On larger inland water: lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits. The list above holds every spot on the map that is tagged for windsurfing, and it grows as spots are added.
How do I know whether the wind at a spot is good right now?
Each spot shows the current wind, gusts and direction, blended from the weather stations and airports around it. Once enough riders have rated sessions at a spot, it also says whether the current wind matches what they rated as good; until then it says it does not know yet instead of guessing.
Can I be notified when the wind picks up?
Yes. With a free account you set a threshold for wind or gusts and, if you like, a range of directions for a station. When the conditions hold for long enough you get an alert by e-mail, Telegram or push notification.
Is the wind on this page measured or forecast?
It is measured wherever possible: the number at a spot is blended from real weather stations and airport reports within about 15 km, nearer sources counting for more and airports for double. Where a computed model point is included it counts for half as much as a real sensor. It is a live reading, not a forecast.
